Cunningham Children’s Home -- Field Day

This coming Thursday, June 6th, will be quite the event put on by the Cunningham Children’s Home.  An initiation to the Summer for all involved, the event will be outdoors and serve as a brief soccer training camp for participants.  Josh May, of the Flatland United F.C. Academy, will be volunteering along with several of his fellow trainers, coaches, and players. As a volunteer for the second year in a row, Josh is excited to bring his talents as a soccer coach.  According to Josh, “last year was the first year we participated [by incorporating soccer and athletic training]... it is a great release for the kids to get out there and learn a fun sport while getting exercise.”

The Cunningham Children’s Home is a nonprofit organization that has been in existence for well over 100 years.  It is a safe place where children and young adults with emotional & behavioral disabilities can heal, learn, and develop.  Although the organization has been in existence since 1895, it’s purpose today is to offer specialized foster care, independent living programs, residential treatment, and therapeutic special education to children and young adults aged 5-21.  In short, their mission is to help those who need it most and usually have nobody to turn to.

“The mission of Cunningham Children's Home is to offer emotional, social, educational and spiritual support to children, youth and families by providing a safe, nurturing, therapeutic environment in which individuals may experience personal growth and healing.”

This Thursday’s event will be an outdoor fun-n-games, athletic extravaganza.  According to Josh, “I was unsure about the event going into it for the first time last year.  At the end of the day I feel that we definitely allowed the kids a unique and fun experience.  We felt great about it and are looking forward to this year’s event even more.”  When he’s not coaching soccer or volunteering, Josh is a full-time insurance agent for Country Financial in Champaign, IL.  He is married with 3 kids and is a Champaign native.

This year, at the encouragement of Josh, College Chef’s Director of Operations Jake Sanders will be participating on Thursday as well.  A trained Chef, Jake will be bringing some type of culinary program to the table.  According to Jake, “As of now we’re still working out the details but my intention is to show these kids something cool and different.  From everything Josh tells me these kids have a lot of passion--with a little direction maybe we can steer that passion into a potential career path or even just a hobby...When I was younger I had easy access to a kitchen growing up, and because of that I knew I wanted to be a Chef.  Most of these kids don’t have that opportunity and this may give them at least a glimpse into the culinary world.”  Based in Champaign, College Chefs is a food service company that provides professionally trained chefs for fraternities & sororities with customers spread throughout much of the country.

The Field Day Event will take place this Thursday, June 6th, at the Cunningham Children’s Home located 1301 N Cunningham Ave, Urbana, IL.  It will start at 10am and go until about 1pm.  If you are interested in giving to the Cunningham Children’s Home, donations can be arranged at http://www.cunninghamhome.org/giving.htm.
