Chef Steven Shroyer is an outstanding, award-winning chef who has been thrilling diners for over 40 years with his original culinary creations. Currently, Chef Steve works his made-from-scratch magic at the Alpha Omicron Pi house at Indiana University to the delight of the nearly 120 young women he feeds each day.
Known company-wide for his incredible baking skills, Chef Steve also holds the distinction of heading up what is arguably the cleanest and finest-run kitchen in the entire company. Plying his trade in a society currently obsessed with doing things the easy way and celebrating the concept of instant gratification, Chef Steve is a throwback to a different time and era. Studying under Chef Paul Maud in the Cordon Bleu Apprenticeship program over 40 years ago, Chef Steve likes to say that he earned his stripes “one peeled tomato at a time.”
He is undoubtedly one of the brightest stars in College Chef’s galaxy of talented artists, but this is only one small chapter in the tome that is the life of Chef Steve. His lifelong excellence outside of the kitchen is truly mind-boggling. Raised in an artistic household where diligence and academic results were demanded and celebrated, Chef Steve was already an accomplished musician when he began his college studies at the age of 16. He graduated with his degree just two years later. Chef Steve has passed along his love of academics to both of his children. His son is currently studying physics at the post-graduate level, while his daughter will graduate from Indiana University (a year early!) this spring.
Chef Steve’s artistic abilities are on display both inside and outside of his kitchen. A lifelong concert musician, Chef Steve currently plays horn in both the Columbus City Band and the Brown County Community Band. Annually, Chef Steve shares his musical talents with the ladies of Alpha Omicron Pi by producing and performing in a holiday show that has become a hot ticket on the Indiana University campus.
Chef Steve is also an accomplished woodworker who could have spent his career focusing on this medium. For many years, he created intricately designed, hand-made jewelry boxes of the highest quality and workmanship. In just the past five years, he combined his love of music and woodworking by designing and building his own classical guitar. Chef Steve immediately set out to master this instrument. His love of discipline and hard work also manifests itself in his love of martial arts. Chef Steve wears the red sash in his study of Tai Chi and shares his knowledge of self-defense with his daughter and other young women.
Finally, Chef Steve and his wife Sylvia are the owners/operators of a highly successful fudge business in the ultra-competitive retail market of Nashville, Indiana. It is no surprise that their fudge shop is known throughout the area for using the finest ingredients to create outrageously tasty treats.
Chef Steve is a true artist in every sense of the word. Admiringly nicknamed “Master Steve” by his co-workers for his seemingly Zen-like knowledge of all, he eternally remains a student of life. Quoting French chef Auguste Escoffier, Chef Steve shares the belief that the difference between a good and a bad result depends on an individual’s “capacity to take infinite pains” in the pursuit of perfection. We can’t wait to see what Chef Steve will do next!
